Today’s been a good, but busy, day. Too busy to finish off that post that’s been lurking, for months, in my drafts but a good day to drop a few links that might be interesting.

Oxford’s Word of the Year 2022 is… goblin mode. Which is defined as “a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.“Leaving aside the fact that goblin mode is, in fact, two words… I’m pleased that it won out over “metaverse” or “#IStandWith.” While I’m a fan of Snow Crash, the association for 2022 with metaverse is more to do with Facebook’s trying to make some form virtual reality Facebook++ happen. I’d be all for a good “metaverse” experience, but it isn’t going to come from Facebook. (Sorry, but we all know it’s still Facebook, right?)
Also, I like “goblin mode.” It’s fun and apropos of the times.

Banning AI is all the rage: The Verge reports that Stack Overflow is banning AI-generated answers. The general trajectory of technology seems to be: Neat technology is invented → technology is immediately abused to make things worse → absolutely nobody learns from this.I’m pretty sure that the first written message was “we’ve been trying to reach you about your rock’s extended warranty.”
It will be interesting to see how well Stack Overflow does at detecting the wrong answers. Maybe if they train an AI…

What if failure is the point? This long-form post by danah boyd about the Twitter takeover asks the question I see too few people wrestling with, what if failure is the point? Too often we assume that success by traditional measures is the point, when really… sometimes failure is the point because there’s more money to be made (one way or another) in the failure. Anyway, go read the full piece because it’s worth the time and thought.
